Sólheimajökull – Safety

Be safe at Sólheimajökull

Hazardous conditions at Sólheimajökull glacier

Conditions at the edge of Sólheimajökull have changed and are changing rapidly. Making access to the glacier more difficult and hazardous.

We reccomend to go with a guide, a guide who has thorough knowledge of this area.

A small lagoon has formed east of the glacier tongue. The ice ridge between the lagoons has thinned due to melting and calving and is now unstable. The ice may collapse, and visitors could slip or fall into the cold, deep glacial lagoons.

There is also a risk of rockfall from “Jökulhaus”, the hill above the access route on the southeastern side of the glacier. Rockfall can occur suddenly, particularly during heavy rain and rapid temperature changes.

  • stay off the unstable ice ridge and other ice formations
  • keep away from the glacial lagoons
  • minimise time spent below steep slopes
  • follow all signs and local instructions
  • check current conditions before visiting

Tour operators have cancelled trips in the area as a precaution while safer routes are being assessed.

Attention. Conditions may change from day to day, Read all information signs at site for your safety. More information about the condition at Icelandic Met Office.
